Warm Apple French Toast
Before waffles ever became my best breakfast friend, there was french toast. We had a thing. I remember the first time I ever tasted french toast. It was suggested by a friend's mom when she took us out for breakfast one morning at IHOP (also my first time eating at IHOP). I was 12. We were on our way to Six Flags. Life was awesome. I digress...
Anywho, the fried sweet bread topped with powdered sugar was an all new taste explosion that sent my little buds into euphoric food heaven. And I ordered french toast on every breakfast menu it was available for the next 10 years.
With that being said, french toast holds a dear place in my heart. Although it's no longer my first option (I think I played it out for too long), I still love to make it for my family. And I do something a little different almost every time.
Since it's fall, (and I had some really sweet honey crisp apples at hand), I decided to make a warm apple topping for some french toast I whipped up for breakfast one Saturday morning. This took no time and came out so delicious!
You'll need...
6 slices of bread ( I used whole wheat slices)
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1 honey crisp apple
1 tbsp vanilla extract
1 tsp cinnamon
brown sugar
water
powdered sugar (for topping)
Warm you griddle to 350 degrees. Spray with cooking spray.
Pour milk into medium sized mixing bowl. Add eggs and whisk together. Add cinnamon and vanilla extract. Whisk a little more.
Dip bread in mixture slice by slice until entire slice is coated in mixture on both sides (Don't oversoak!). It doesn't take much if you're using standard sliced sandwich bread. Thicker breads will need to soak a bit.
Add slices to griddle and cook for about 2 minuted on each side or until browning occurs. I Like mine golden brown.
For the apples,
Slice half of a large honey crisp apple. Slice the half into standard sized slices. Warm skillet to medium-high. Add about a half cup of water. Add 4 tbsp of brown sugar. Add apple slices and sprinkle with a little more brown sugar. Let cook for about 5 minutes, stirring in between. (Add more water as you go if mixture drys while cooking in the skillet).
Top toast with apple slices and powdered sugar (if desired) and enjoy! The toast is soooo moist and the apples are so sweet you can eat these plain without syrup.
But if you must, pour away!
